Hello and welcome to my blog!
My name is Sue, I’m 32 years old, and I live in a small village in Southern Germany, in Bavaria, to be exact. My blog Sue In Training is about my quest to combine a full-time desk job, great food, and a healthy active life style. I enjoy writing about my workouts, delicious recipes, and other fun stuff.
I recently got married, and I’m really enjoying being a wife.
My Story So Far
To be honest, I used to spend the largest part of my days on the couch, I hated physical activity and loved sweets and snacks. Back then I didn’t really care about my health and was clearly overweight. I wasn’t happy with myself, but I just ignored my problems, focusing on working and studying instead.
Vegetarian For Life
My first major turning point happened in December 2006. At that time I had severe stomach problems, probably from the cafeteria food at the college I was working at. I noticed that I felt better whenever I ordered only side dishes, like salads, plain rice, steamed veggies. So out of a whim I decided to try a vegetarian diet for a while, and also to cook my meals from scratch. I felt so much better! My stomach problems vanished, I had more energy and felt less sluggish. And I lost 20 pounds in the first five months, without even trying!
So far, so good, but I was still sitting on my couch.
The Big 3-0
And then I turned 30. The thought of it nearly freaked me out! I thought that my 30th birthday meant I was officially starting to get old. But to me it also meant it was time for me to finally grow up and get a grip on my life. Yes, this is MY life and I can control it and change it, to be the person I’ve always wanted to be. So I finally decided to lace up my shoes and get my butt off the couch!
Getting Started
When I wanted to start exercising seriously, tried to find activities that I would enjoy. I don’t really like gyms, and the few decent ones around here are too expensive for my liking. So I got myself an elliptical trainer, some workout dvds, a pair of dumbbells, and set up some kind of “home gym”. I also found a local Pilates class, that is really fun. But after a while I wanted more. I was looking for a real challenge! Enter my arch-enemy: Running!
From Couch To 5K
I really used to hate running! For me running has always been the worst form of activity. Even back in high school I dreaded the days when we were supposed to run. It was horrible! By chance I found the blogs of Caitlin (Healthy Tipping Poing) and Emily (Daily Garnish). They (among others!) taught me, that it IS possible to go from having to stop after 1/4 mile, to run a full marathon! So one day I just went out the door to RUN! I was huffing and puffing and had to walk a lot, but I was RUNNING. And it wasn’t half as bad as I expected. I’m still a total beginner and so slow that even the snails pass me. But I’m RUNNING, and I’m even starting to enjoy it.
5K And Beyond
In May 2011 I finished my first official 5K and had so much fun. So there will surely be more races soon. Check out my races page for updates!
Cheers!

Wow, I would never believe you are 30! You look so young, I would have placed you early twenties – no flattery, I’m serious.
I really enjoyed turning 30 and I’m loving my 30s so far – I have so much more confidence than I did in my 20s and it makes me sad that I wasted so many years feeling insecure about silly stuff.
Great blog, I’m really enjoying it
Wow, I’m shocked! Thank you so much, Jo! I’m blushing right now.
I know exactly what you mean, in my early 20s I wasn’t very happy with myself.
Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog!
Just found your blog through Sabine’s blog fruitpursuit – she was so nice to point out that the commentor above me is German as well

oh just reading your About Me page for the first time!
And now you know (almost) everything about me.
I love that you’re conquering running even though you never thought you could do it! I’m doing the same, and was certainly inspired by other bloggers, as well. AND you completed your first 5k!! So inspiring! I’m planning to sign up for a 5k the end of April!
Glad I found your blog!
Do it! Racing turned out to be so much fun. I had no idea!
